Travel to Milan
One of the world's fashion capitals, Milan has a lot to offer, including the iconic Duomo di Milano, the largest and perhaps most stunning Gothic cathedral in the world; thin mosaics and glass vaults of Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II; and impressive museums, such as Pinacoteca di Brera. Milan also has the most fashionable restaurants, the most wonderful cafes and the old Milanese tradition of aperitifo. No trip to the city would be complete without some serious shopping amidst the myriad of options. In the evening, get tickets for a show at the wealthy La Scala opera house.
HISTORY
Ruled by the Caesars, Napoléon, the Austro-Hungarians and Mussolini, Milan has an ancient and fascinating history. After the unification of Italy in 1861, it also became an important industrial and cultural centre – a title it still holds today. Milan has been interesting and vibrant at least since it was the capital of the western half of the Roman Empire. It was one of the most glorious of the Italian Comuni during the Middle Ages. It housed one of Italy’s most spectacular courts during the Renaissance Today the city leads the way with the largest post-war re-development in Italy, impressive, sustainable architecture and a futuristic skyline modelled by Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and César Pelli. The city is also burgeoning into a hi-tech hub, home to start-ups galore and the likes of Google, Microsoft, Alibaba and Apple.
LEISURE TIME
Milan is the hub of Italian culture, music, media and sports. If you are a music lover, you can’t miss La Scala. If you are a sports fan, no other city can probably boast two soccer powerhouses like Inter Milan and AC Milan. With so many things to do and see, take the time to simply enjoy yourself – relax and sip an aperitivo while you consider your options for dinner. Milan provides an overwhelming dining experience, as all Italian regional cuisines are richly represented, along with many others from the rest of the world.
